What is knee replacement revision surgery?

All the surgeries undertaken are meant to last long and it may be possible that the surgery may require redone for some reasons maybe because of the physical activities being done by the patient or maybe due to some complexity. So basically, knee replacement revision surgery is the redoing of the healthy knee device harvesting into the patient replacing the old with the new. It is more complex than the original knee replacement surgery as it requires removal of the original knee implant operated earlier. The procedure requires skilled professional for the replacement revision surgery, efficient tools and accurate planning for the process to be undertaken.

Reasons for Knee Replacement Revision Surgery

     •        Increased pain or improper functioning of the knee
     •        Device failure
     •        Bone fracture
     •        Infection
     •        Implant loosening
     •        dislocation

Process

Knee replacement surgery revision is generally done through two main steps-

First, the surgeon removes the old prosthesis and inserts a polyethylene and cement block known as a spacer that has been treated with antibiotics.

Second, the surgeon removes the spacer, reshapes and resurfaces the knee, and then implants the new knee device. Both these two procedures usually take place about six weeks apart. Inserting the new device typically requires 2-3 hours in surgery (as it involves two operations) compared to 1 and half hours for a primary or original knee replacement in first place.

Implants of original or primary replacement is different from the revision all implantation. All the original implants have to be removed to carry out the revision all procedure. There are thick and extra support in the form of bone stems in the surgery. Any damaged bone in the area must be removed and damage is usually extensive.

The very main point to be noted is that a patient can undergo maximum three knee replacement procedure of which crossing the limit may cause threat to the life of the patient.
